What Are the 3 Most Common Complaints About Nursing Homes?

Oct 28, 2021 | By Dempsey Kingsland Osteen | Read Time: 2 minutes | Nursing Home Abuse

Nursing homes are not always particularly fun places to be, but that doesn’t mean they should be uncomfortable places to be, either.

Unfortunately, nursing home residents tend to have several complaints about the facilities in which they stay. Some of the most common complaints include:

#1 – Inferior food quality.

It’s impossible to please everyone’s taste buds, but complaints regarding the quality and variety of food options have continued to rise in recent years. It’s critical that nursing homes provide healthy food options for residents with enough variety to please picky eaters too.

While your loved one is in a nursing facility, it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for signs of malnutrition. Ask the staff if you can bring meals in for your loved one to ensure they are getting the calories and nutrients necessary to live a comfortable and healthy life.

#2 – Resident needs are not addressed within a reasonable amount of time.

It’s easy to see why a nursing home resident may feel neglected if the nursing home staff is busy when they are called for care. Staff members tend to have very high workloads, so it may be difficult to immediately respond to all calls as they come in.

Ultimately, nursing home staff should make every effort to address patient calls in a reasonably timely fashion.

#3 – Social isolation.

It’s common for nursing home residents to complain that they are not getting enough social interaction with others. While many nursing homes do what they can to host events and get residents together, it’s not the same as getting together with friends and family in an informal setting.

Sadly, there is not much to be done about this other than spending more time with your loved one. However, if you are concerned that your loved one is being unnecessarily socially isolated in the facility, this may indicate abuse or neglect.

If you suspect your loved one has endured abuse in a nursing facility, we want to help your family seek justice.
