Even Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries Cause Lasting Damage

Aug 8, 2014 | By Dempsey Kingsland Osteen | Read Time: < 1 minutes | Brain Injuries

A new study has found that even mild traumatic brain injuries (TBI) can lead to permanent cognitive impairment. The study, published in a recent edition of the medical journal Neurology, focuses on the use of a very specialized form of MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging. The test, called DTI, or diffusion tensor imaging, provides an image of the brain utilizing contrasts and brightness. According to a report by Fox News, the tests allow physicians to determine how healthy the brain is after a patient suffers a traumatic brain injury.

Areas of the brain that are damaged by the injury will show a change in brightness in the images provided by the DTI test. Researchers with the study ran the tests one week after the injury and then ran the tests again a year later. Upon comparison, some improvements were present but most patients continued to suffer from brain damage. Researchers explained that any damage present in the brain after one year is generally considered permanent.

The study provides an example of the long reaching consequences of a traumatic brain injury. Victims can suffer these injuries in a variety of situations, including car accidents. If involved in a car accident caused by another driver’s negligent action, compensation could be available to help cover medical and rehabilitative costs.

As a result, it is wise for those injured in a car accident and suffering from a brain injury to contact an experienced brain injury attorney. This legal professional will review the details of your case and help to better ensure you receive the compensation you deserve.
