$1.83 Million Settlement in Vaccine/Neurological Disorder Case

A 60 year old Cass County woman was awarded $1.83 million after she developed a rare neurological disorder resulting from an adverse reaction to the influenza vaccine. She received the vaccine as part of a routine doctor’s visit on November 10, 2005. The following morning she experienced numbness in her legs and feet and was later diagnosed with transverse myelitis, a spinal cord inflammation that attacks the protective substance covering nerve cell fibers.

She filed a claim under the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Act. The parties litigated over damages with the court finally entering a judgment approving a lump sum payment of $1.02 million and additional payments of roughly $878 thousand over the course of the woman’s lifetime. The woman who lived on a ranch and cared for horses continues to experience pain, fatigue, a loss of stamina and episodic numbness.
