While in law school, Sydney studied abroad at the University of the Western Cape Faculty of Law in Cape Town, South Africa. There she studied the similarities and differences between the United States and South African dispute resolution, constitutional law and criminal law. She received a CALI award for her work in the South African Constitutional Law class. Sydney served as the Board of Advocates Negotiation Competition Director and served as a student ambassador for prospective students of Mizzou Law.

Sydney was the starting varsity softball catcher all four years of her high school career and was a member of the 2011, 2012, and 2013 state championship teams. In 2013, she was selected as First Team All-State catcher. Sydney broke several Missouri State High School softball records, currently still holds one individual record, and is still ranked in the record books in several other categories. She still holds several Centralia High School records, including no defensive errors in a season, RBI in a season, and doubles in a season. Sydney was recruited to play college softball, but an injury and surgery ended her career, which prompted her to transfer to the University of Missouri-Columbia and pursue law school.

She is a member of the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys and the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Association. Sydney is a published author in the Journal of Law and Social Deviance.
