Mother of Ten Year-Old Discharged Too Soon Following Weight Reduction Surgery - Tachycardic - Patient Soon Dies from Pulmonary Embolism

Pulmonary embolism is a great risk for many surgeries. Its signs and symptoms much be carefully monitored. If they are not, tragedy can result.

In this case, the patient was a forty year-old mother and wife. She underwent weight reduction surgery. She was monitored, but the outpatient facility seemed to ignore the worsening signs of pulmonary embolism. In fact, the day after surgery, the patient’s heart rate was up to 155 beats per minute, a significant sign of tachycardia and an even greater sign of possible pulmonary embolism.

Despite the above sign of a critical condition, the woman’s surgeon was not verbally informed. She was sent home where her condition worsened. The surgeon tried to monitor the condition over the phone but within 36 hours she was dead. A terrible and unnecessary tragedy.
